Solar Inverters
Solar Inverters in Sydney
Your inverter is the part of a solar system that works hardest. It converts the direct current your panels produce into the alternating current your home runs on, manages how much you pull from the grid, and on a hybrid system it decides when to charge and draw from a battery. When an inverter fails the whole system stops, so picking a good one, and replacing a tired one before it dies, matters more than most people expect.
Greenlight Solar supplies, installs and replaces solar inverters for homes across Sydney. Our Clean Energy Council accredited team matches the inverter to your panels, your roof and whether you plan to add a battery, then commissions it to the standard the manufacturers and your network operator require.
The types of solar inverter, and which suits your home
String inverters
are the most common and the most affordable. Your panels connect in a series, or string, to a single wall-mounted unit. They suit most standard rooftops that get good, even sun through the day.
Hybrid inverters
do the same job but are built to run a battery as well. If you have storage now, or expect to add it while the current battery incentives last, a hybrid inverter saves you buying a second unit later. It is the sensible choice for most new Sydney systems.
Microinverters
sit under each panel rather than on the wall, so every panel works independently. They cost more, but they earn it on roofs that face several directions or catch shade from trees, chimneys or neighbouring buildings, which is common on tighter Sydney blocks.
Off-grid setups need a different class of inverter again. Most Sydney homes stay grid-connected, so we will point you to the right type once we have seen your roof and your goals.
The inverter brands we install
We fit Sungrow for reliable string and hybrid units, Solis as a strong value option, Enphase microinverters for shaded and complex roofs, and Sigenergy where you want the inverter, battery and EV charging in one cabinet. We also install and service Fronius, SMA and GoodWe. If you are replacing a failed unit, we can usually match or upgrade whatever brand you already have.
Solar inverter replacement in Sydney
An inverter is the first part of a solar system to wear out. Most last ten to fifteen years, while the panels around them keep going for twenty-five or more, so a mid-life inverter swap is normal rather than a sign something went wrong.
Signs yours may be near the end:
- Your generation has dropped and your bills have crept back up.
- The unit shows a fault light or an error code, or the monitoring app keeps going offline.
- It shuts down on hot days or makes noise it did not used to.
If any of that sounds familiar, we replace inverters right across Sydney. We check that the new unit suits your existing panels, confirm whether you want it battery-ready, handle the paperwork with your network operator, and get the system generating again the same day in most cases.

How much does it cost to replace a solar inverter?
For a typical home system, an inverter replacement usually runs between $1,500 and $3,000, depending on the size of your system and whether you move to a hybrid or micro setup. Upgrading to a hybrid inverter costs more upfront but saves you a separate purchase when you add a battery. We give you the exact figure in writing after we have checked your system, with no obligation.
What size inverter does your system need?
Inverter size is measured in kilowatts and is matched to the size of your panel array. As a rule the two are close, though a modest amount of panel oversizing is normal and helps in weaker light. Getting the ratio right is part of the design, and we size it against your panels rather than selling you more inverter than you need. If you are planning a fresh system, see our solar panel range.
Planning a battery? Start with a hybrid inverter
If storage is on your list, the inverter choice you make now decides how easy that is later. A hybrid inverter is battery-ready out of the box, so you avoid a second inverter or an AC-coupled workaround down the track. Vivek Shettigar2026-03-22Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Couldn’t be happier with Greenlight Solar in NSW. The team installed a Fox 42kW battery paired with a 10kW inverter, and 6.6kW along with DC coupling my old system to additional string and the quality of work was excellent. Everything was done efficiently, and the installation was very clean and well-organised. Kunal stood out in particular—he was honest, upfront, and gave clear advice with no pressure. It’s rare to find that level of transparency these days. Overall, a fantastic experience and I highly recommend Greenlight Solar! Edwin Moniz2025-08-14Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We installed a Sungrow solar battery 4 weeks ago to our existing 5 year old solar panel system through Greenlight. On both the occasions my experience with Greenlight has been very positive and satisfying. From design to quoting to the installation evrything has been flawless and without any stress. Amanda was amazing during the design and quoting process. Even though we went through a few changes, every change was done obligingly and promptly. Kunal, with his wealth of knowledge and willingness to share and steer you towards the best possible outcome has been instrumemtal and we ended with a "bang for our buck" system. In the 4 weeks since the system was put in, even though we had a majority of cloudy days, our projected bill for this quater has dropped from around $1200 to just around $700. Extermely happy with our experience with Greenlight and Kunal and would highly recommend them. Paul Smith2025-03-28Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My Solar System experience with Greenlight Energy Solutions was Excellent We recently (Feb-2025) had a Solar system installed. First contact on 3-Feb-2025 was with Amanda who had spent time answering my questions and running thru my wish list. Amanda then provided several quotes on the same day to give me options based on what I had asked for which initially included a battery with the Solar. Being a bit of a novice when it comes to Solar, a day later 4-Feb-2025, I called back to have further discussions around options that excluded the battery. I was then provided a couple of quote options on the same day that were close to my initial request without the battery, quotes also met my budget. Greenlight Energy Solutions were so easy to deal with and were quick to provide quotes. I got 2 other companies to quote for similar setups but found then less forth coming on details (Although they were similar pricing) I signed on 7-Feb-2025 with Greenlight who kept in contact with me giving me and organised everything It was just simple and easy to deal with. solar was installed 24-Feb-2025 and I got my first solar energy at 1pm and the reductions on my bill and first Tariff income too . Solar Module: 23 × Jinko Solar Tiger Neo Satin 440W Inverter: 1 × Sungrow Power SG8.0RT (3 phase) Over a month later I am so happy with the install and the change it has made to my electricity bill. I have also had further contacts with Greenlight Energy Solutions to have a consumption meter installed, pending and I am looking into adding a small battery in the near future. Exceptional Customer Service – Amanda Went Above and Beyond! I recently bought a home with Greenlight Energy Solutions solar panels, and the service I received from Amanda was exceptional. She made the switch to my name super easy, guided me through setting up the app, and explained everything in a way that was clear and straightforward. What really impressed me was how Amanda handled an issue I had with the Sungrow inverter. She reached out to the company on my behalf and stayed on top of it until the problem was fixed, keeping me updated the entire time. Her dedication and professionalism made the entire experience stress-free. FAQs About Solar Inverters
What is a solar inverter and what does it do?
A solar inverter converts the direct current your panels generate into the alternating current your home and the grid use. It also manages how power moves between your panels, your home, the grid and any battery, and reports how the system is performing.
What is a hybrid solar inverter?
A hybrid inverter does the normal job of converting your solar power, and it is also built to charge and run a battery. Choosing one now means you can add storage later without buying a second inverter or an AC-coupled workaround.
How much does a solar inverter cost?
For a new home system the inverter is usually $1,000 to $2,500 depending on size and type, and it is included in the system price rather than bought on its own. A hybrid inverter costs a little more, but saves you money when you add a battery.
How long does a solar inverter last?
Most string inverters last ten to fifteen years, and microinverters often longer. That is shorter than the panels, so one inverter replacement over the life of a system is normal.
How do I know if my inverter is failing?
Falling generation, a fault light or error code, the app dropping offline, or the unit shutting down in heat are the common signs. If you see them, it is worth having it checked before it stops completely.
String, hybrid or micro, which should I choose?
String suits most standard roofs, hybrid is best if you have or want a battery, and micro is worth the extra on shaded or multi-direction roofs. We recommend a type once we have seen your roof.
Can I add a battery to my existing inverter?
If your inverter is a hybrid, usually yes. If it is a standard string inverter, you either replace it with a hybrid or add an AC-coupled battery that brings its own inverter. We check which is cheaper for your setup.
Do you replace inverters across Sydney?
Yes. Our CEC accredited team replaces and re-commissions inverters right across Sydney, on most brands.
